More Than a Spectator: The NGSSA Parent’s Guide to Making This Season Count

There’s a moment every softball parent knows. Your daughter steps onto the field. Her glove is in hand. Her helmet is slightly crooked. And suddenly, you realize — this is so much bigger than a game.

It’s confidence being built in real time. It’s friendships forming in dugouts. It’s your girl discovering what she’s made of, one pitch at a time.

At NGSSA, we’ve watched that moment happen for over 50 years. And we know that behind every great player is a parent who showed up — not just to the games, but in all the ways that truly matter.

You’re More Powerful Than You Think

Your attitude on the sideline matters more than you know. Research shows that a parent’s energy and body language directly affect how much a child enjoys their sport.

You don’t need to know the difference between a force out and a tag play. What your player needs is simple. She needs your presence. She needs your encouragement. She needs your belief in her.

So cheer for the effort, not just the outcome. Celebrate the diving stop just as much as the home run. And when things don’t go her way — because sometimes they won’t — let her know you’re proud of her no matter what.

Be Her Parent, Not Her Coach

Many parents fall into the same trap. They want to help so much that they become a second coach. It comes from a good place. But your daughter already has coaches she trusts, so let them do their job.

Your role is different — and just as important.

After a game, try resisting the urge to break down every play on the drive home. Instead, ask her: “What was your favorite moment today?” That one question opens the door to connection rather than critique. It also keeps the love of the game alive.

Capture Every Moment

The seasons go faster than you expect. Before you know it, the cleats won’t fit anymore.

So take the photos. Cheer a little too loud. Save the game-day programs. If you catch your daughter charging a ground ball with everything she’s got, or lifting a trophy with her teammates — hold onto that image.

Those are the moments that last a lifetime. And they are exactly what NGSSA is all about.

A Look Back: Where It All Began

NGSSA was founded in 1971. A group of Northshore volunteers came together with one simple belief — every girl deserves a chance to play. More than 50 years later, that vision is still alive on our fields every spring.

Take a look at a vintage photo of the 1979 Shelton View Minors. Light blue jerseys. Leather gloves. The biggest smiles you’ve ever seen. It’s remarkable how little has changed.

The same joy is there. The same teamwork. The same community spirit that makes NGSSA something truly special. Those girls grew up. Many of them brought their own daughters to these very fields. That’s the legacy you are now a part of.
